‘One For The Money’ ‘Not Just A Chick Flick,’ Stars Say

‘There’s explosions and there’s shooting! You’re gonna like it too,’ Katherine Heigl tells MTV News, selling her new movie to men.

NEW YORK — Since parting ways with “Grey’s Anatomy,” Katherine Heigl has established herself as a queen of romantic comedies, starring in several “chick flicks” such as “27 Dresses,” “Life as We Know It” and “New Year’s Eve.”

In her latest movie, “One for the Money,” based on the best-selling Janet Evanovich novel, Heigl takes on the role of Stephanie Plum, a tough Jersey girl who becomes a recovery agent sent to track down a murder suspect — who just so happens to be her ex-boyfriend.

If it sounds like the perfect recipe for a ladies’ night out, not so fast. At the movie’s New York premiere, Heigl promised that “One for the Money” will keep women and men on the edge of their seats.

“I wouldn’t qualify it as a romantic comedy. It’s got [romance] and it’s got comedy, but it’s mostly about this sort of murder-mystery undertone that keeps it moving and keeps the pace going,” Heigl told MTV News. “I always feel like I’m selling it to men, like, ‘There’s explosions and there’s shooting! You’re gonna like it too, I promise!’ ”

Lending her comedic chops to the flick, “The View” co-host Sherri Shepherd agreed with Heigl’s assessment: “It’s a lot of action and it’s a lot of fun. It’s something that I think my husband, who is 6-6, 280 pounds, would love. So no, it’s not just a chick flick; it’s a fun film.”

Now, if the ladies of the film haven’t convinced non-female moviegoers, they may want to take some advice from their male co-stars.

“There’s action sequences,” Daniel Sunjata said. “There’s definitely a healthy enough dose of testosterone and really good storytelling that I think the guys will have a great time at this movie too.”

Heigl’s love interest in the film, Jason O’Mara, added, “I think if the guys come and see it, there’s gonna be lots in it for them. This is not a frilly romantic comedy. With all due respect to Katie’s past work, this is not ’27 Dresses.’ There’s something kind of edgy, something kinda blue-collar about this that gives it a bit of a realism, and I think it’s cool. Whether you’re male or female, I think you’re gonna have a good time.”

Pre-caffeine tech: Google+ for teens, Facebook for seniors!

By Helen A.S. Popkin

via BuzzFeed

Our pre-caffeine roundup is a collection of the hottest, strangest, and most amusing stories of the morning. Here’s everything that you need to know before taking that first sip of coffee today.

Apple CEO does not care for your comments about Apple not caring about worker abuse in China.

Twitter announced Thursday that it would begin restricting Tweets in certain countries, marking a policy shift for the social media platform that helped propel the popular uprisings recently sweeping across the Middle East.

But here’s how you get around those restrictions.

Teens ages 13 and up in the U.S. can now join Google’s social network, Google+, although the search giant said it is adding safety measures for younger users. What it didn’t say is that it adds to Google’s efforts to get more users on Google+, including an announcement earlier this week it will allow users to have alternate names.

Meanwhile, Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill didn’t spare Facebook in her speech opening?a forum on Data Privacy Day ? even though the event was live-streamed by the social network, in conjunction with the National Cyber Security Counsel.

Meanwhile, Aerosmith’s?Steven Tyler might’ve sung about a?”dude [who] looks like a lady,” but Google’s convinced that a lady?? yours truly?? has the Internet browsing habits of a dude.

The next time you make a particularly strange typo, don’t throw your keyboard out the window ? instead just smile. Smile, because it’s possible for a simple typo to lead to a marriage — like it did there these two.?

In closing: “Facebook & Twitter For Seniors For Dummies” exists.?

Brain receptor in eyes may link epilepsy, cataracts and antidepressants

ScienceDaily (Jan. 26, 2012) ? Researchers from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and Columbia University have discovered that the most common receptor for the major neurotransmitter in the brain is also present in the lens of the eye, a finding that may help explain links between cataracts, epilepsy and use of a number of widely prescribed antiepileptic and antidepressant drugs. The research appears online in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications.

“Recent studies identified associations between increased cataracts and epilepsy, and showed increased cataract prevalence with use of antiepileptic drugs as well as some common antidepressants,” explained corresponding author Peter Frederikse, PhD, of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. “One common theme linking these observations is that our research showed the most prevalent receptor for the major neurotransmitter in the brain is also present in the lens.”

The research team, which included Norman Kleiman, PhD, of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, with Mohammed Farooq of the New Jersey Medical School and Rajesh Kaswala, DDS, and Chinnaswamy Kasinathan, PhD, from the New Jersey Dental School, found these glutamate receptor proteins, and specifically a pivotal GluA2 subunit, are expressed in the lens and appear to be regulated in a surprisingly similar manner to the way they are in the brain. In the nervous system, glutamate and GluA receptor proteins underlie memory formation and mood regulation along with being an important factor in epilepsy, considered a primary disorder of the brain. Consistent with this, these receptor proteins are also targets for a number of antiepileptic drugs and antidepressant medications.

“The presence of these glutamate receptors in the lens suggests they contribute to links between brain disease and cataract, as well as providing unintended secondary ‘targets’ of current drugs,” Frederikse said. “Our goal now is to use this information to parse out the potential effects of antiepileptics and antidepressants on these ‘off-target’ sites in the lens, and to determine the role glutamate receptors have in lens biology and pathology.”

This research was supported by a grant from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Burn baby burn: HP pays out $425,000 to prevent a disco (laptop) inferno

The Haus of Meg will pay $425,000 in order to settle a claim that it consciously flogged laptops with batteries that could overheat or catch fire. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission slapped the company on the wrist for not issuing a recall quickly enough. It claimed that HP knew about 22 incidents involving battery ‘splosions by September 2007 — including one instance of a user being hospitalized, but didn’t begin issuing a recall until ten months later. By May 2011, the company had recalled over 90,000 affected units that were prone to the odd bout of spontaneous combustion. If you’re concerned you’ve got a duff battery, check out our list here.

Belichick strives for consistent approach

(AP) ? Season opener or Super Bowl, every game is a big game to Bill Belichick.

His consistent approach to preparation for the next opponent, whether a powerhouse or a pushover, is the cornerstone of the coaching that has brought the New England Patriots to their fifth Super Bowl in 11 years.

The more intense the practices, the more prepared his players are for the game.

“You know what to expect week-in and week-out with him,” wide receiver Matthew Slater said. “The attention to detail is always there. It doesn’t matter if it’s a bye week or if it’s a divisional playoff round. He’s committed to winning and that commitment never falters, no matter what the circumstance, no matter how much success we’ve had or how many games we may have lost in a row.

“That commitment to winning is always there.”

During practices, Belichick strolls the field, sometimes twirling his whistle on a lanyard, other times stopping to talk with players. His daily message is simple ? get the fundamentals right and just do your own job while preparing for the uniqueness of the next opponent.

That’s resulted in 10 straight victories, eight in the regular season and two in the playoffs. Another win on Feb. 5 against the New York Giants would give the Patriots their fourth Super Bowl championship.

“I think every game is a big game,” Belichick said Tuesday. “Every time we get an opportunity to compete then we try to take advantage of the time leading up to that opportunity ? the practice week, the preparation, the film study, understanding our game plan and our adjustments, all of those kinds of things.

“What else is there to work on but the game, the next one on your schedule, the one that you’re playing? You try to cover all your bases for that game, you play it, and then you start the process all over again with the next one.”

Right guard Brian Waters played his first 11 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. But when he signed with the Patriots on Sept. 4, eight days before the season opener, he quickly sensed the difference in Belichick’s style.

“I wasn’t here in training camp but, from day one, I can tell that he’s all about the details,” Waters said. “He’s all about everybody doing their own job and staying in their lane. Everybody has their own responsibilities. That’s something that you learn early on and that’s something that he still makes sure that we understand today.”

Another part of the Belichick playbook: Don’t focus on the past or far into the future, just on the next practice and the next game.

That’s a big enough workload, considering how hard he pushes his players.

James Ihedigbo didn’t start a game the past three seasons with the New York Jets, but did go to AFC championship games the past two seasons. The Jets lost both. This season he started 12 of 16 games at safety for the Patriots and reached the Super Bowl.

The Patriots are special, he said, “because we prepare. We prepare harder than any other place that I’ve played and it definitely gets you focused in on your opponent and knowing them and understanding their strengths and how they want to attack you.

“So that’s what we’re keyed in on this week.”

And this season’s playoff wins over Denver, 45-10, and Baltimore, 23-20, are fading rapidly from players’ minds.

“It has been going on all year and you just have to put everything in the past,” tight end Rob Gronkowski said. “If you have a good game, that is all over with and you just have to keep moving on forward to the future and make sure you have a good practice week.”

Running back Stevan Ridley, drafted in the third round last April, was the team’s second-leading rusher during the regular season. When the playoffs began, he didn’t notice much difference in Belichick’s intensity.

“You know coach Bill, man, every game is serious,” Ridley said, “playoffs, regular season, preseason.”

One of the Patriots’ most veteran players, left tackle Matt Light, also has played for just one head coach. Drafted in 2001, only Tom Brady and Kevin Faulk have been with the team longer.

What stands out most about Belichick is his “consistency, just his ability to stay focused to the nth degree and do that repetitively, week-in and week-out,” Light said. “It’s not an easy thing, obviously, running a team and putting up with a lot of guys like myself and the rest of the knuckleheads in that locker room.

“But you know what? I think that coming in and setting that example with our entire coaching staff and how he approaches everything, it makes it easy for all of us to fall in line.”

Consumer finance chief touts enforcement powers (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The government’s new consumer finance watchdog agency is prepared to sue companies that offer unfair or deceptive mortgages and credit cards, its director said Tuesday.

Addressing a congressional panel, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray defended his appointment to the post and assured critics that the agency will work with financial companies whenever possible.

But “we will not hesitate to use enforcement actions to right a wrong,” Cordray told the Republican-controlled subcommittee of the House Oversight Committee.

Cordray was addressing Congress for the first time since his recess appointment by President Barack Obama earlier this month. He faces questions about the bureau’s actions and the legitimacy of his appointment.

Republicans call the appointment illegal because the Senate technically was not in recess. Republicans were holding minutes-long sessions during their vacation to prevent the President from making any appointments.

The CFPB might lack credibility in part because it is run by a director whose “appointment was constitutionally questionable,” said Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., chairman of the subcommittee.

McHenry is a major beneficiary of political donations from the payday lending industry, which will face much tighter oversight because of Cordray’s appointment.

Cordray said that he is aware of objections to his appointment, but “I’m in the job, it’s an important job, it’s a big job, it commands all of my time and attention, and all I can do is try to carry out the responsibilities.”

Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., asked whether the agency has made plans for what to do it Cordray’s nomination is invalidated by a legal appeal.

“We have to carry out the intent of that law,” Cordray replied. “Either we do or we don’t. It seems to me that the right answer is that we do.”

Senate Republicans had refused to confirm Cordray because many opposed the creation of the agency. They wanted it run by a bipartisan commission and pledged to block any nominee until the powers of the director were reduced.

Officials from the team that set up the agency, including Elizabeth Warren, now running for Senate from Massachusetts, had testified before Congress 11 times since the agency was created under the financial overhaul law in July 2010.
